Free Hand Poi Grips

Free Hand Poi Grips (Pair)
Tossing and throwing poi is nothing new, but the development of weighted grips has enabled poi spinners to enhance their tossing, allowing for the development of cool new tricks and contact poi moves. Our Free Hand Poi Grips further improve this, with an ergonomic and easy to catch design.

The Free Hand Poi Grips are approximately 4" long and weighing approximately 37 grams, crafted from smooth hardwood and formed in to a shape that is comfortable to hold. An eye-bolt is embedded in it, with a metal sleeve around the wood to reinforce it, creating a seamless but strong connection for your poi leashes.

As an additional option, we can integrate swivels in to them by welding them directly on to the eye-bolts. Sold as a pair.

I have to admit that I am by no means a 'pro' poi spinner, but I find myself much more interested in throws, tosses and passes on poi, and these handles are great for that. Enough counterweight that it keeps the chain straight , but not so much it hurts to catch... and super durable for when you -don't- catch them! (I've thrown mine in to walls, concrete, pavement, bounced them off all manner of things, and while there's dings in the wood, no chips or cracks yet.. and boy have I tried!) The imbedded eyebolt also seems to have no chance of possibly coming out, ever. If I had to say something negative about them.. uhm.. the swivle-eyebolt connection is a little noisy, and can occasionally catch if you hold it certain ways.

I have to say that these are the best handles I have ever used! That said, my rating is somewhat biassed. When I purchased these handles, Fire Mecca did some custom modifications, and I did some of my own as well. I ordered it with an eyebolt that stuck out about an inch from the grip, and had a swivel welded directly onto the eyebolt (as well as the chain). After I got them, I took some extra squishy tennis grip and wrapped it around the exposed bolt as a spacer, and then wrapped some fire resistant electrical tape on top of it (a comfier but less elegant version of what Chris did). My middle finger rests on the tape, and I pinch the swivel between my fingers! This provides a huge amount of control, while still allowing for tosses (and these handles fly really well). The only real flaw in the design of these handles is the inability to get split rings onto the eyebolt. If you look at the leashes that are sold in the Poi Parts section, you can see that chains can be ordered with swivels welded onto one or both ends. If only the same were available for these handles, either with a split ring attached, or welded directly onto a swivel! To sum up, while there are a few flaws in the standard version of these handles, their reliability, weight adjustment feature, visibility while spinning (sparkly is helpful with tosses), fire resistance, overall craftsmanship, as well as their longevity, is unparalleled. I would sooner spend a week modifying a standard issue pair of these handles, than use any other handle.

I love the overall design and weight. I added a longer eyebolt in it and a small 1-inch long tube to give a spacer between the grip and eyebolt. This really gave me a great grip spot to avoid the slipping problem. Still trying to find a way to solve the comfort of wrapping them up short. Overall though, these are great! I was able to start doing aerials the same day I got them. Their weight is perfect and adjustable too. Having the handles weigh about the same as the head helps tremendously! Plus the reflective tape makes it easy to spot the handle during night burns to catch them!

The attachment hardware/eye hole metal is too thick to attach to the quick links....this makes it impossible to quickly change from my leather grips to these during performances. If I use one of your heavy duty split rings, it increases the length of my chain just enough to throw me off on certain "close to my body or face" moves. The shape is nice, easy to grip, a bit slick though, especially when sweating and trying to catch. New Addendum posted on Oct 9, 2008: Matthew read my review and contacted me right away; there was a mistake in the shipping dept and a pair of larger quick links were supposed to have been included. He got those out to me right away and they fit perfectly! These are really fun to play with, the ability to modify the weight to balance with my poi is very nice. Still a bit slick when sweating (who sweats when spinning fire? :) ), but that's not a huge deal. Thanks muchly for your personal attention Matthew, as always. -Pan

GREAT idea.....needs a bit of work, though. can we figure out a way to not have them spin so "clunky" i.e. not smooth?
